【trivia02】Ryosen-ji temple and Seiryu Shrine

Fujie・Matsue

There is a transmission that National Priest Hoto opened Ryosen -ji temple in 1254. He returned home from Southern Song, China, in 1254, so he might visit here. This temple is located on the slighty elevated hill near the Hama Highway and the mouth of the Fujie River, so it was once near the sea.
Seiryu Shrine was built in 1254 as the guardian angel shrine of Fujie Village. They invited Uenomiya Gosha Great Myojin and made Uenomiya Seiryu Gosha Great Myojin its worshiped god. Seiryu Shrine is located at the place where the Fujie River meets the Hama National Highway now, but it seemed to be on the slightly elevated hill near the beach in those days. Priest Houn of Rinzai sect revived Ryosen-ji temple in 1701. Both of them have the same kanji “ryu” in their names and were built at close place in the same year. It might be an idea of mixture of Shinto and Buddhism. People in Fujie Village have believed in Ryozen-ji temple and Seiryu Shrine devotedly for a long time.
