The Fujie River runs through the middle of the village of Fujie area from the north to the south. One of origins of place name of Fujie is “Fuchie” or the deep water inlet.
Probably the Fujie River flew into a large inlet. But earth piled up in the mouth of the river over many years and the marsh appeared. The river was repaired in the Showa period, so that the likelihood of natural disaster became low.
The center of the area to the west of the Fujie River is in front of Ryosen-ji temple and Seiryu Shrine, and there relatively large houses gather. Because this area was a wetland, people layed Tatsuyama stone and made ditch to build their houses. That brought this land good drainage.
On the other hand, the east village of the river near the mouth ot the river has many long and narrow streets and houses at right angle to the sea. The layout of houses like strips of paper shows that this area was once a fishing village.
