善楽寺五輪塔は平清盛の供養塔といわれています。五輪塔を供養すると死者は必ず成仏し極楽往生すると信じられた中世の供養墓です。中央の火輪・水輪は鎌倉後期以降の秀作ですが、上部の空・風輪は後世の造りです。
10. the memorial tower erected for the repose of Taira-no-Kiyomori’s soul
The five-part grave stone at Zenraku-ji temple is said to be the memorial tower erected for the repose of Taira-no-Kiyomori’s soul. It is one of Japanese-style medieval tombstone. In those days, they believed that after they erected the five-part grave stone the dead would become Buddha and go to Paradise. Its upper two parts which mean sky and wind and water, the latter were excellent works made from the second half of the Kamakura period on.
