17.なまこ壁の土蔵

藤江川沿いに立派な土蔵を見かけました。腰壁の斜めの目地が、漆喰塗しっくいぬりで、なまこに似ていることから「なまこ壁」と名づけられ、防風や防雨の働きがあります。ここは海や川にも面しているのでなまこ壁を活用したと思われます。

There is a wonderful warehouse by the Fujie River. Each of the diagonal gridded stucco beaded joints of square flat tiles on the waist -high walls looks like half a sea cucumber of namako in Japanese. So we call it namake wall. This is useful for windbreak and rain cover. This building is so close to the sea and the river that they seems to have used namako wall.
